The Quick Answer
What to Plan for on New Year's Eve, City by City
Most large cities close streets around their main celebration, and the closure zone is usually where people want to be picked up.
City | What to Plan For |
New York City | Extensive closures around Times Square that begin early in the day and expand into the evening, with city guidance favoring mass transit into the area |
Las Vegas | The Strip has historically closed to vehicle traffic by early evening, with some freeway ramps closing earlier |
Miami | The Bayfront Park celebration brings traffic changes along Biscayne Boulevard late in the evening, and Miami Beach has closed Ocean Drive to cars |
Chicago | Downtown bridges and sections of Upper Wacker Drive have closed for the Riverwalk fireworks, and Navy Pier hosts its own show |
Boston | First Night draws crowds to the Common and the waterfront across the day, and city officials have recommended public transit between sites |
Washington, DC | Plan around downtown crowds and street restrictions, and check official DC advisories before the night |
Los Angeles | Plan for heavy demand and event-area closures, and check official sources for the current plan |
